Background of the Study
Sleep deprivation is increasingly recognized as a significant public health issue that adversely affects cognitive function and overall well-being. In Bauchi State, factors such as long working hours, stress, and socio-economic challenges contribute to insufficient sleep among adults and adolescents alike. Adequate sleep is essential for cognitive processes such as memory consolidation, attention, and decision-making; however, chronic sleep deprivation impairs these functions, potentially reducing academic performance, work productivity, and increasing the risk of accidents (James, 2023).
Recent studies have demonstrated that even modest reductions in sleep duration can have detrimental effects on cognitive abilities, leading to decreased concentration, impaired judgment, and slower reaction times (Aliyu, 2023). In Bauchi State, the rapid pace of urbanization, coupled with the demands of modern lifestyles, has led to a significant portion of the population experiencing chronic sleep deficits. Moreover, cultural practices and environmental factors, such as high temperatures at night, can further disrupt sleep patterns.
The impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive function has far-reaching consequences, especially for students and working professionals who rely on optimal mental performance. Despite the growing body of literature on sleep and cognition, there is a paucity of data specific to Bauchi State that investigates how local factors influence sleep quality and cognitive outcomes. This study seeks to address this gap by examining the relationship between sleep deprivation and cognitive function among residents of Bauchi State.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the study will collect quantitative data through standardized cognitive tests and sleep quality assessments, as well as qualitative data via interviews exploring personal sleep habits and environmental influences. The findings are expected to inform public health strategies aimed at improving sleep hygiene and, consequently, cognitive performance among the population (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
In Bauchi State, chronic sleep deprivation has become a prevalent issue, with significant implications for cognitive function and daily performance. Many individuals, including students and professionals, report inadequate sleep due to factors such as extended work hours, stress, and environmental disturbances. This widespread sleep deficit is linked to reduced concentration, impaired memory, and slower cognitive processing, which not only affect academic and work outcomes but also increase the risk of accidents and injuries (Aliyu, 2023).
Despite the known risks, there is limited local research that quantifies the impact of sleep deprivation on cognitive performance in Bauchi State. The lack of data hampers the development of effective interventions aimed at improving sleep hygiene among the population. Furthermore, cultural attitudes that undervalue sleep, coupled with socioeconomic pressures, contribute to a cycle of poor sleep habits and diminished cognitive capacity. These challenges are exacerbated by insufficient public awareness about the importance of sleep, as well as limited access to resources that promote healthy sleep practices (James, 2023).
Without targeted interventions, the adverse effects of sleep deprivation will likely continue to impair cognitive function, reducing overall productivity and quality of life. This study aims to systematically investigate the relationship between sleep deprivation and cognitive performance in Bauchi State, thereby providing a basis for public health initiatives designed to promote better sleep habits and enhance cognitive function.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will target adult populations in urban and rural areas of Bauchi State. Data will be collected via sleep quality questionnaires, cognitive tests, and interviews. Limitations include reliance on self-reported sleep data and potential confounding variables.
